The Institution Watch: Now Part of Every vCOP Patrol

In October 2023, vCOP was asked to provide -and responded with- special patrols that focused on keeping an eye on Jewish community institutions in Cote Saint-Luc. Since then, vCOP has enthusiastically stepped in with "Institution Watch" patrols that have extended the reach of our public safety partners -Public Security and the SPVM.

With heightened global tensions, we've again been asked to ramp up our presence with more "eyes and ears" on the street. While law-enforcement agencies have responded to these threats to the community, they can't be everywhere, all the time. But vCOP has the capability to fill in those gaps. So, effective immediately, all patrols will include an Institution Watch as part of every shift. You will continue to patrol throughout Cote Saint-Luc as you normally do, but with the integration of the Institution Watch as an essential part of your mission.

For those of you who are not familiar with our "Institution Watch" program, its purpose is simple: It puts vCOP vehicles (including ebikes and scooters) on the road with the specific duty of keeping an eye on our Jewish institutions (synagogues, schools and community centers). We move from institution to institution, spending several minutes in front of the facilities, as well as on the adjacent streets. We are watchful -in addition to being a highly visible deterrent to crime.

Some points to remember:

  • Focus on synagogues, schools and religious facilities
  • Complete the special "Institution Watch" checklist during your patrol
  • Do NOT get out of the vehicle to inspect the institution
  • As patrollers, we are trained to be observers and listeners only
  • Act within the limits of our mandate, training and our need for personal safety
  • Do NOT engage any suspicious individuals, but rather keep in visual contact (at a safe distance) and relay information
  • If it's suspicious, call Dispatch. If it's dangerous, call 911

The members of our community are appreciative and repeatedly thank vCOP for this added service. More than ever, we need to see and be seen. Be vigilant!
